Modern Abolitionist Movement Leaders
|
Ruth Vilela was the secretary of labor inspection in Brazil, but has since retired. During her time as secretary, Vilela helped to free countless slaves from unfortunate conditions and made Brazil a country with one of the best anti-slavery programs in the world. Vilela’s effective leadership and inventiveness has made this achievement possible. She has created “the world’s most innovative anti-slavery SWAT squad” that help to free slaves by raiding places like farms and sweatshops, in which the slaves are kept at. Ruth Vilela has also invented a national Dirty List and the National Pact. The Dirty List is a list that publicly shames human traffickers and exploiters, and the National Pact encourages companies to remove slavery from their supply chains. With all the feats Ruth Vilela has accomplished, it is no wonder how she has helped to lead an anti-slavery program that has helped to free more than 45,000 slaves.

Free The Slaves
Slavery has been abolished since 1865, but it still has not been completely eradicated. Human trafficking and slavery is still in use around the world. Free the Slaves is an organization dedicated to finishing what early abolitionists have already started - ending slavery for good. After Dr. Kevin Bales eye-opening book, Disposable People, many started paying attention to the horror of modern-day slavery. Free the People was the result of the attention brought upon the subject. Abolitionists realized that something needed to be done to stop slavery and trafficking.
The organization’s main goal as of now is strengthening communities. By building strong relationships between people of the same area, immoral acts like slavery are prevented. Another objective of Free the Slaves is to identify which communities are at risk, and then to use and develop “intellectual, organizational, legal, political, and physical assets needed to liberate those enslaved and overcome fundamental vulnerabilities to slavery.” These assets are supported by years of research and study, and have proven to be effective in reducing slavery in communities. The work of Free the Slaves has freed thousands of slaves around the world, and has educated even more about the matter. It inspires other abolitionists to join in and end slavery once and for all.
