Purpose of the Movement
Times of Slavery
The beginning of slavery for America had dated back to 1619, when Americans brought slaves into Jamestown, for the need of aiding production to lucrative crops such as tobacco. Slavery was one of the biggest events in America during the 17th and 18th centuries, and helped create the economic foundations of the US today. The one of the biggest moments of slavery was the discovery of cotton, however the cotton gin brought in more numbers of slaves. The number of slaves had increased production numbers in the south making them rich. Slavery was one of the greatest things that had happened to the south, but did the slaves enjoy their time? No. Fortunately, they weren’t the only ones, because the people up at north had not approved of the idea of taking another’s life. That was the beginning of the abolitionist movement.
The abolitionist movement and purpose
The abolitionist movement was created as a movement to abolish slavery in the 1830s. Anti-slavery revolutionists created items such as pamphlets, speeches, poems, books, and sermons, that were to be used for audiences of slave owners and people alike, no matter what color, what gender, what age, and what social class. Many people, no matter what color, gender, etc., had been part of the movement, it mattered whether they cared or not. Some people who were against slavery had conducted a secret system network of people, places, etc., for slaves to get help from. This place that was created was know as the Underground Railroad. This wasn’t all though.
Slaves themselves had also rebelled against slave owners, by either running, burning crops, violence, and more. All these actions had annoyed the South. The south hated this anti-slavery revolution. They wanted to stop it. Soon, the south had stopped the production of anti slavery packets towards them to live their life happily, but even then, they could still hear about anti-slavery. It had got so bad, the south had separated themselves as their own country to prevent more of this. However the conflict had went so far, it had let to the Civil War of 1861-1865. The north had won, and slavery was put to justice and the united states was once united again...
The hidden truths of slavery today
These days, even though the slavery problem in America had been resolved, it wasn’t really put to an end. An annual amount of 14,500 - 17,500 humans are being trafficked into slaves in the US alone. According to cnn.com, “Estimated number of slaves in the world today 10-30 million” and with this number, the world is struggling more than ever with the problem of slavery. Also according to the United Nations report, 54% of slaves that are being trafficked don’t know the person who kidnapped them, while 46% do know the person who kidnapped them. Slavery has been a huge problem and can even be in your neighborhood. It’s a huge problem that still persists today.
